Objectives: Jatropha gossypifolia linn. (Euphorbiaceae) is an important and widely used medicinal plant. Jatropha gossypifolia is used as a traditional folk medicine in ailments such as inflammation, arthritis, wounds, antioxidants, tumors and burns, degenerative joint disease, urinary calculi, anticoagulants, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. \r\nKey finding: The total flavonoid content of ethanolic leaf extract of Jatropha gossypifolia was determined by using aluminium chloride colorimetric method. Flavonoid compounds were found to be 10.29 �µg of quercetin equivalent [QE] per mg of ethanolic leaves extract of Jatropha gossypifolia which is comparatively less to the aqueous leaves extract of Jatropha gossypifolia. Conclusion: In this study phytochemical analysis of ethanolic extract of J. gossypifolia L. has indicated the presence of flavonoid, glycoside, steroids, saponins and alkaloids. Since these compounds are of pharmacological interest, coupled with the use of this plant in traditional medicine.
